McCarthy Tally Takes Down Lynn in SSC Showdown

The Florida Tech Panthers women’s soccer team got a much-needed road win on Wednesday, beating Lynn 1-0 at Bobby Campbell Stadium in Boca Raton.

The Panthers (6-5-2, 3-3-1 (SSC) had 29 shots and kept Lynn goaltender Alexa Downie on her toes all night, as she made seven big saves in the first half and four more in the second half. The one save she couldn’t make was at the 56:43 mark, when Elin Svensson connected with Keira McCarthy, in a great pass. McCarthy ripped a shot from 10 yards out and put the Panthers up, 1-0.

This was an up-and-down game with both teams getting some early chances. The Fighting Knights had two free-kicks and a corner in the first four minutes but were unable to get a shot on goal. Panthers goalie Karlyn Prisco only made one save in that first half.

The Panthers definitely had the better of the chances in the first 45, as Downie had to make a couple big saves, tipping the ball over the crossbar and a nice diving save at the 18:09 mark on a shot by Svensson.

The Panthers got the better of the play in the second half as well, but Lynn did get some good play from Donish Henry-Cole who showed off her speed a few times but couldn’t find a goal on the end of her runs.

Prisco did take a couple chances late, particularly with 29:19 left when Gabriela Moreira forced her to come out of the net and Prisco found the ball and snatched it up.
With 85:41 elapsed, the Fighting Knights got a free-kick, resulting in a header by Jamie Perriello that hit the far post and bounced away.

Prisco was only called on to make two saves, as the Panthers held a distinct advantage in shots (29-11) and shots on goal 12-2. Lynn took seven corners to the Panthers two, with none of those resulting in a tally.

The Panthers came into the night ninth in the Sunshine State Conference standings. With the win, the Panthers leapfrogged Lynn, who was holding on to the sixth and final Sunshine State Conference tournament spot.

Florida Tech returns home Saturday, to take on the Tampa Spartans. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
