Panther Women Take Down Tampa

The Florida Tech women’s soccer team put a damper on Tampa’s senior night on Saturday, taking home a 2-1 win in a key Sunshine State Conference match.

The dynamic duo of Keira McCarthy and Maria Munoz scored the Panthers goals, helping the visitors erase an early 1-0 deficit.

Both teams were locked in a back-and-forth struggle for much of the first half, until Libby Wissman was able to beat Maria Sanchez Recuero from about 20 yards out, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead with 3:20 left in the first half.

Tampa (6-5-4, 4-3-2 SSC) would get another late chance when Lisa Caprara got loose on a breakaway and looked to be in good position to score, only to see the clock hit zero before she got her shot off.

The Panthers best chance in the first half came in the 27th minute, when Jeeda Al-Naber rocketed a shot toward the low corner, only to see Tampa goalie Megan Bromwell make a diving save.

Florida Tech (8-7-1, 5-4-0 SSC) was outshot 8-5 in the first 45 minutes, and Recuero was forced to make three saves. Bromwell had a clean sheet in that first half.

It took 16 minutes for the Panthers to even things up. Munoz got a ball into the 18-yard box and McCarthy was there to put it home and tie the game, 1-1. The goal was the ninth of the season for McCarthy.

Munoz put the Panthers ahead for good in the 79th minute when she converted on her second penalty kick in as many games. She had one Wednesday night in the Panthers senior night win over Lynn.
