Tars Topple Panthers in Regular Season Finale

The Florida Tech women’s soccer team traveled to Winter Park Tuesday for the final game of the regular season against the Rollins College Tars. It was a tough night for FIT as Rollins got two second-half goals and went on to win the match, 2-0.

Despite the loss, the Panthers are still going to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, by virtue of their 5-5 conference record, giving them the final spot in the six-team field.

The Panthers (8-8-1, 5-5 SSC) took 21 shots in this match, with seven of them on goal. Rollins keeper Kelly Rowswell came away with a clean sheet. Maria Sanchez Recuero made six saves for Florida Tech, allowing two goals in the second half.

Keira McCarthy took six shots to lead the Florida Tech attack, with three on goal. Maria Munoz put two of her five shots on goal.

Sanchez Recuero made three saves in the first 8:34 of the game. The Panthers first shot on goal came from Kelley Johnson 19 seconds later. Munoz got a shot on goal with three seconds left in the half but came up empty.

The second half saw Recuero pressed into action in the first two-plus minutes, as Kathryn O’Brien took two shots 11 seconds apart. Chynna McGirt scored the first goal of the game in the 64th minute, with an assist from Jill Richards.

The Tars would get the insurance goal 1:44 later, when Richards converted a penalty kick.

Florida Tech will play in the quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament on Monday, October 29th. The opponent will be a familiar one, as they will face these same Tars in Winter Park. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m.
