The Florida Tech Panthers quest to repeat as Sunshine State Conference champions ended Monday night, when the Rollins College Tars came away with a 1-0 victory in the SSC quarterfinal match in Winter Park Florida.
It was the second time in six days that the Panthers lost at Rollins, as the Tars beat FIT 2-0 in the regular season finale last Tuesday.
Maria Sanchez Recuero made four saves for the Panthers in goal, but the one save she couldn’t make came off the foot of Chynna McGirt, with an assist to Kathryn O’Brien at the 13:27 mark of the first half. McGirt scored one of the goals in last Tuesday’s game as well.
Florida Tech (8-9-1) couldn’t get anything going in that first half, sending just three shots in the direction of Kelly Rowswell, who earned her second clean sheet of the season against the Panthers. She saved one shot by Brittany Etrick, and two by Maria Munoz in the first 45 minutes.
Munoz ended the night with three of her six shots on goal, to lead the Panthers.
In the second half, the Tars kept the pressure on, but Munoz made three saves, keeping the Panthers in the match.
Each team took 10 shots in that second half, with both goalies coming up with three saves. Kelley Johnson added a shot on goal in that second half.
