Lions Snap Panthers 14-Game Run

Starting pitcher Auria Mounts retired the last 13 Florida batters she faced Friday afternoon, helping her Saint Leo Lions hand the Florida Tech Panthers a 4-2 loss at Nancy Bottge field. The loss snaps FIT’s 14-game winning streak.

Mounts (6-5) went the distance for Saint Leo, giving up three hits and one earned run. She struck out four and walked three, throwing 62 of her 110 pitches for strikes.

Florida Tech (15-3, 3-1 SSC) got on the board in the bottom of the first after Mounts struck out the first two batters she faced. Tina Velazquez singled to start the rally and Vanessa Rubio walked. Jaden Kline was up next and beat out an infield single, bringing Velazquez home and giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Saint Leo (9-9, 4-3 SSC) answered with a run in the top of the third against Panthers starter Melanie Murphy. Amanda James singled and was sacrificed to second. She would later tie the game on an Ashley Morris single.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Xiarysse Emerenciana used her speed to beat out an infield single. After she stole second, Rubio and Kline drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases. That brought Alexus Smith to the plate and she hit a line drive to third that was not handled, allowing Emerenciana to score, and giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

The Lions would tie the game on a James home run with one out in the fifth. They would break the tie with two runs in the top of the sixth, on RBI singles from Sarah Pauscher and Grace Spitulski, giving SLU a two-run advantage.

Smith would be the last baserunner to reach for the Panthers, as Mounts retired the final batter in the third inning and had four no-hit innings to end the game.

Murphy (6-3) took the loss in her complete-game effort. She gave up four runs on nine hits, striking out four without allowing a walk. She threw 95 pitches, 69 for strikes.
