Satellite Win Sparked by Defense and Special Teams

By: Donny Rieber

The Satellite Scorpions beat Father Lopez handily on Tuesday night, taking down the visiting Green Wave 27-6.

The Scorpions went up 14-0 early thanks to their special teams. A botched snap on a punt led to both scores. The first led to a Christopher Morris touchdown run, and the second was a fumbled snap picked up by Jonah Montanez, who took it to the house.

The Satellite defense played well in the first half, keeping the Green Wave off the board. They would not allow the Green Wave offense much of anything all night.

Gage Malkin took over for John Hinkell at quarterback for Satellite in the third quarter and he threw a flare pass that was turned into a pick-6 by Father Lopez defender Antwan Scott. The extra point was missed, and the Scorpions led 14-6.

Satellite finally kicked their offense into gear in the fourth quarter. They would go for it on 4th-and-12 with about eight minutes left and Malkin found Morris who took it down to the eight-yard line. They would score on a Malkin to Gunnar Greenwald connection with 6:01 to go, making it 20-6.

A late touchdown pass to Brayden Green put the game out of reach and gave the Scorpions their second victory of the season.

Satellite will be on the road Friday to face Pine Ridge at 7:00 p.m.
