BREVARD SPORTS NETWORK SPRING FOOTBALL PREVIEW – Astronaut War Eagles

With no spring football on tap, we thought we would take this time to look ahead to what we all pray will be an on-time start to the 2020 high school football season.

We will post each team’s schedule throughout the next few weeks and give a small preview as to what we can expect.

Next up in our spring football previews, we present the Astronaut War Eagles.

Astronaut finished with a record of 6-6 in 2019 under head coach Justin Worden. They were in the middle of the pack in Class 4 A Region 2. The War Eagles lost their first two games, including their opener to Eau Gallie, before winning four out of five including victories over Palm Bay, Space Coast, and Melbourne Central Catholic.

The War Eagles were a run-first team with the dual-threat combo of Abreon Torres and Jaiden Dollard. Torres led the way, rushing for 1,235 yards on 127 attempts He averaged just over 102 yards per game, while Dollard rushed for 1,163. As a team, Astronaut rushed for 3,009 yards. Torres will be counted on even more this season, as Dollard was a member of the Class of 2020.

Sophomore quarterback Antonio Caito threw just 17 passes as a freshman in 2019, behind Connor Ferguson, who was in his senior season. The two completed 30-of-70 passes.

Dollard led the receiving corps with 109 yards. The underclassmen that should return this season had 10 catches between them last season.

Defensively, the War Eagles lost their top tackler Mike Henderson, along with their three-leading sack-getters to graduation. Torres had 117 tackles last season including three sacks. He had 52 solo tackles and four tackles for loss. They will need another big season out of him for this defense to succeed in 2020.

Astronaut will open their season against Eau Gallie on August 21, at 7:00 p.m. They will play Merritt Island and MCC on consecutive weekends, along with games against Palm Bay and Heritage later in the season. They will end the regular season against rival Titusville on October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
