BREVARD SPORTS NETWORK SPRING FOOTBALL PREVIEW – Holy Trinity Academy

The Holy Trinity Tigers met a tough end to their 2019 season, with a 21-14 loss to The First Academy in the Class 3A FHSAA playoffs on November 15. The Tigers held a 14-7 lead until the fourth quarter when the Royals scored 14 points.

With the loss, Holy Trinity ended the season with a 6-5 record that included a 4-1 finish on the road.

Head coach Nate Hooks returns in 2020 and will look to junior Ja’Lon Hudgins to lead his offense again. Hudgins threw for 1,363 yards in 2019 with 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 21 yards.

Carlos Estronza and Demetrius Robinson will likely be Hudgins’ top targets this season. Estronza played in six games last season and had 14 catches in just six games, going for 169 yards. Robinson had 10 catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Kevin Chandler who was a running back and wide receiver had 1,809 yards in those capacities and 2,100 all-purpose yards. He scored 23 of the Tigers’ 35 touchdowns and threw a pass in a game against Eau Gallie in September.

The running game will be revamped since the Tigers lost 1,582 of their rushing yards with the graduation of Chandler and Latarious Hill. They also took 14 of the 15 rushing touchdowns with them. Larry Edgecombe and Jadon Gowins combined for 52 yards and one touchdown in 2019 and will likely be the top returning players at the position this season.

Estronza will likely return to his linebacker position on defense. He had five sacks and one pass defensed in 2019, while Gowins had 48 tackles. There will be some sports to fill on the defensive front, as the teams’ top three tacklers led by Trey Palmer have graduated.

James Linnabary was 12-for-14 on extra points and 1-for-3 on field goals last season. He will likely resume those roles this season.

The Tigers will open their season at home on August 14 against the Melbourne Catholic Central Hustlers as part of the Kickoff Classic. It is the first of four straight home games, and the start time is to be determined. Their first road game will be against Space Coast on September 11, at 7:00 p.m.
