Sidney Toukonen was only a freshman on the 2019 Merritt Island Christian softball team, but she pitched well beyond her years that season. She threw 102.2 innings, walking 66, and striking out 132. When all was said and done, Toukonen threw in all but two innings, throwing in excess of 1,700 pitches and leading the Cougars to an 8-9 overall record, including a 6-2 district record. She was rewarded for her efforts, being named the MIC Player of the Year.
In one of those district games against Morningside Academy on April 9, Sidney threw all 11 innings in a 10-9 MIC win. She struck out 17 Eagles in the game while walking only four. She faced 51 batters and threw 182 pitches.
Covid-19 cut the 2020 season short, with the Cougars playing just six games. Toukonen pitched 35.1 innings, striking out 56.
With two seasons left Sidney is far from done re-writing the Merritt Island Christian record books. We look forward to following her progress.
