Panthers Fall at PBA

Florida Tech (7-7) closed out March with a regional game at Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, losing 12-6 to the Sailfish.

The Panthers had nine hits and left 13 on base, while PBA pounded out 17 hits and left 10. Each team had three errors.

Rodnie Bernard continued his hot hitting, putting together a three-hit game in the loss. Raul Quintero had two hits and he and Bernard both had two RBIs. Landen Morrison led the Sailfish with three hits and three RBIs. Sean Houck also drove in three and was one of five PBA players with two hits.

Danny Vassallo got the start for the Panthers and gave up a solo home run to Morrison leading off the bottom of the first. 

The Panthers jumped in front in the top of the second, scoring five times. Sam Schner’s infield single in the top of the second brought home Paul Castillo, tying the game at one. Quintero’s RBI single was followed by Jakob Newton taking one for the team, as he got plunked bringing Brett Parrish home with the third run. Bernard’s two-run single capped the big inning.

The Sailfish came back with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the second, closing the gap to 5-4. Vassallo would finish the inning but his day was a short one. He allowed four runs on six hits in two innings.

A sac fly by Quintero in the top of the third scored Parrish and made it 6-4. Parrish had reached on an error earlier in the inning.

Joey Hecht took over for Vassallo in the bottom of the third and he gave up a solo home run to Brandon Seltzer to start the frame and make it 6-5. They would strike for two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, putting the Sailfish up 7-6.

Houck’s twp-run home run in the bottom of the sixth highlighted a three-run inning and gave the home team a 10-6 lead. They would tack on two more in the bottom of the eighth.

The Panthers are back in action Thursday, April 8 when they travel to Lakeland to take on Florida Southern in a 5:00 p.m. game.
