Panthers Beat NSU, Head to Semis

Florida Tech women’s soccer extended their season on Monday, beating the third-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. It was the fourth straight win for Florida Tech and their ninth win overall.

Marem Ndiongue scored the only goal of the match after a corner kick by Mayara Queiroz Reis.

That goal came in the 11th minute of the match and held up with Panthers goalie Maria Sanchez Recuero earning her ninth clean sheet of the season. NSU had 11 shots in the match with seven on goal. Sanchez Recuero was up to the task, including making key saves in the 80th and 81st minute. She also made a save with 30 seconds left in the contest.

Sixth-ranked Florida Tech (9-2-5) dominated the first half possession and had the better of the chances. They had 10 shots with Queiroz Reis registering five (1 SOG) and Ndiongue taking four. She had two on goal and one of them was the game-winner.

Queiroz Reis took the corner kick and after a collision got the ball back to her she sent the ball into a very congested 18-yard box. The ball landed at the feet of Ndiongue who bobbled it off her foot before gaining control and sending a bicycle kick past NSU goalie Shannon Hearty, and into the back of the net.

Nova Southeastern (8-7-1) got the better of the possession in the second half, but the defense for Florida Tech was stout as it has been all season. The Sharks took eight shots in the second half and had four on goal, after just three total shots in the first half.
