Barry Upends Florida Tech in Pitcher’s Duel

In a game that featured four combined hits, the Barry Buccaneers got a 1-0 victory over Florida Tech on Friday, winning 1-0 in the opening game of the weekend softball series.

Sophomore pitcher Maci Barnhart (5-1) had the Panthers on their heels much of the night, allowing just one hit in the complete-game gem. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. The only hit Barnhart allowed was a single to Mikayla Lewin in the top of the second.

Panthers’ hurler Alex Hendrian got the start for the Panthers and deserved a better fate in this one. The only run allowed in the game came in the second inning, which started with a Florida Tech error. After a single and a sac bunt put runners at second and third, a passed ball allowed Payton Germer to score and put Barry up 1-0.

The Bucs (8-3, 1-0 SSC) got the lead runner on in the bottom of the third, but Hendrian got Becka Mellor to ground back to the circle and she started a double play. The next batter would strikeout, one of Hendrian’s three Ks on the night.

Another error got Barry started in the bottom of the fifth, but a runner got thrown out at third trying to steal for the third out of the inning and that short-circuited what may have been an insurance run for the home team.

Hendrian (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits. She walked three and struck out three.

The Panthers (6-5, 0-1 SSC) used their defense in the bottom of the sixth. A couple nice plays by Ashley Campbell at third and a sliding catch on center by Cheyenne Nelson ended the inning.
