Panthers Beat Lynn in Series Opener

Dylan Dohanos had a 4-for-5 day, extending his hitting streak to 11 games and Jakob Newton hit a first-inning home run, propelling the Panthers to an 11-4 win over Lynn on Friday in Boca Raton.

Danny Vassallo pitched six innings in relief to pick up his sixth win of the season. He took over for starter Joey Hecht who threw two innings before a long rain delay forced him out.

Newton’s home run came in the top of the first and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Byron Murray put Lynn (19-13, 7-9 SSC) in front 3-1 when he took Hecht deep with two runners on.

The Panthers (26-9, 8-8 SSC) got a run back in the second with two men out. Jack Nagy doubled and came home on a Diego Garcia single, making it 3-2.

The visitors put the game away in the top of the third. Dohanos, Paul Castillo, and Newton each singled to start the inning and tie the game 3-3. Brett Parrish reached on a fielder’s choice and an error allowed Castillo to score. Dylan Owens RBI single made it 5-3 and Alec Eldridge knocked in Parrish with a single to double the Panthers’ lead. Schner then reached on a fielder’s choice to bring in Eldridge and give the Panthers a 7-3 lead.

The game was delayed for quite some time and resumed with Dohanos at the plate. He singled home Nagy to put the Panthers up 8-3.

After the delay, Vassallo came out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the third and struck out two in the inning. Lynn got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Ford doubled and later scored on a Pedro Martinez fielder’s choice.

Florida Tech got some insurance in the top of the eighth. Sam Schner singled and stole second before a Dohanos single moved him to 3rd. Castillo’s single plated Schner and it was 9-4. A Parrish double knocked in Dohanos to give the Panthers their 10th run of the night.

Dohanos singled with two outs in the top of the ninth and an error on the play allowed Schner to score from first, to make it 11-4.

Zach Rodgers pitched the bottom of the ninth after Vassallo had retired the last eight batters he faced.  He allowed a single but then induced a double play before getting the final out of the game.
