Panther Women Lose to Barry in Overtime

The Florida Tech women’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss Saturday night, as Molly Sharpe put one in the upper right corner of the net with 3:07 left in overtime, sending Barry to a Sunshine State Conference home victory.

This game was scoreless through 90 minutes, despite the Buccaneers controlling much of the possession. The loss sends the Panthers to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference. They have now lost two in a row.

Barry dominated possession for much of the first half, as Florida Tech goaltender Karlyn Prisco was forced to make seven saves. Barry outshot the Panthers 13-5 over the first 45 minutes and had four corners to the Panthers two. Maria Munoz had two shots to lead FIT.

The Panthers got an early corner in the second half, but were closed down. Moments later, Barry goalkeeper Melanie Ziegner made a great save with her foot as she was falling backward on a shot by Munoz. That was the best chance Florida Tech would have in the second half.

Brittany Etrick did pick up a yellow card for Florida Tech at the 80:44 mark, but it did not hurt the Panthers.

The first overtime was pretty uneventful for the first five minutes or so, but Yanni Asson found Sharpe with a crisp pass and Sharpe rifled one high into the net that Prisco had no chance on. With that, Barry improved to 5-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the conference. They also extended their winning streak to three games.

Prisco did all she could, making 10 saves in the game. She was under duress all night long and at one point after making a save, yelled to her teammates to try to light a fire under the defense. They did play better in the second half, but things were not easy for Prisco for much of the night.

Florida Tech will travel to Lynn to take on the Knights on Wednesday night. The game is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m. EDT.
