Panthers Best Nova in Series Opener

Xiarysse Emerenciana

Melanie Murphy has had a stellar season in a Florida Tech uniform in 2018 and that continued Friday night as her two-hitter helped the Panthers beat Nova Southeastern on Friday night, by the score of 4-1.

Murphy (12-7), who was named Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the week on Monday and the Division II National Louisville Slugger/NFCA Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday, allowed an unearned run in the seventh Friday night, dropping her conference-leading earned run average to 1.04.

The Panthers offense got her all the runs she would need in the top of the first against Sharks’ starter Lexie Storrer. Xiarysse Emerenciana singled, stole second and was chased home when Mikayla Wessel singled, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Wessel went to third on a groundout by Jessica Callahan and scored the second run of the inning when Vanessa Rubio reached on an error by Sydney Lageyre at shortstop.

Florida Tech (24-18, 8-11 SSC) got another run in the top of the second. Rachel Kraak singled with one out and Shanysse Emerenciana singled. Xiary stepped to the plate and doubled home Kraak. Shanysse tried to score on the play as well, but she was thrown out at the plate by Dana Edmundson in center field.

Storrer got the first hit for Nova in the second inning, a single. With the 3-0 lead, Murphy just did what Muphy does. She needed just five pitches to get through the fourth inning and got some nice defense from her outfielders to get through the fifth unscathed.

Kraak got things going for the Panthers again in the seventh with a single. She scored all the way from first on the second double of the night for Xiary, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. That made it 4-0.

Nova (16-20, 5-11 SSC) got their run in the seventh. Edmundson doubled and later scored when Dominique Sprengers reached on an error.
