The Viera Hawks finished the 2019 season 6-4 overall, including a five-game winning streak that started at the end of September and lasting until the end of October.

Dual-threat quarterback Bryce Norton has transferred to Rockledge, meaning CJ Simms will be the starter. He threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns in his sophomore season.

Davis Mallinger, who led a group of receivers that averaged 177.3 yards per game. Mallinger caught 46 passes for 742 yards and seven touchdowns in his junior season. He also rushed 37 times for 257 yards. Just for good measure, Mallinger threw in 219 kickoff return yards, giving him 1,218 all-purpose yards. Mallinger has committed to the University of Central Florida and will play there in 2021.

Caleb Osburn is the other top returning receiver catching 13 passes for 124 yards last season.

TJ Johnson was the Hawks’ second-leading rusher behind Norton carrying 83 times for 563 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 84 yards. Considering he did all that as a sophomore, the future looks bright for Johnson.

The Hawks’ defense averaged 77 tackles per game and had 67 sacks to go along with 19 interceptions as a team in 2019.  Cooper Davis, who will be playing football at Illinois this season, had 103 tackles and 22 sacks. Johnny Eaton is the team’s top returning tackler in 2020. He finished with 81 tackles, including 52 solo tackles. Julius Barfield totaled 70 tackles. Tyler Cooley had 45 tackles including 14 tackles for loss, including 10 sacks. Jamari Lyons had 61 tackles, including nine sacks.

Viera will open the season at home on August 14 with a game against Liberty out of Kissimmee at 7:00 p.m. They will host Cocoa the following week. Another big game will take place on September 18 at Rockledge. They will host Melbourne on October 23, before closing out the regular season with a home game against Vero Beach the following week. All games are tentatively scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
