Panthers Upended by Second-Ranked Sailfish

The Florida Tech men’s soccer team gave the unbeaten Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish all they could handle Friday night, but a late goal by Charlie Dennis helped the visitors escape with a 1-0 victory. This was the 13th shutout of the season for PBA, who allowed just three goals over the course of the season.

The two teams played to a scoreless stalemate in the first half, with each team firing three shots total and one on goal. Palm Beach Atlantic had the best scoring chance of the half, off the foot of Sailfish forward Claudio Rivadeneira, who hit the crossbar next to Panthers goaltender Chris Page, forcing the ball out of play.

The Sailfish (16-0-2, 9-0-1 SSC) finally scored in the 86th minute off a corner kick by Fredo Dilbert. He sent the ball into the box and Dennis was able to corral it and send it by Page.

Florida Tech was unable to find the back of the net in the waning minutes, sending them to their third straight loss.

Florida Tech (9-5-0, 6-4-0 SSC) held the advantage in shots, 8-7, with both teams finishing the night with three shots on goal. Palm Beach goalkeeper Elliott Barker finished with a 9-0-2 record, while Page dropped to 7-4 overall.

Despite the loss, the Panthers secured a spot in the Sunshine State Conference tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The Panthers won’t know their opponent until the match between Lynn and Florida Southern goes final on Saturday night.

If Lynn wins, the Panthers will be the fifth seed in the tournament and will face No. 4fourth seed Rollins in the first game. However, if Lynn loses to the Moccasins, the Panthers will be seeded fourth and host five-seed Florida Southern on Tuesday at Rick Stottler Field.
