Panthers Power Past ERAU

The Florida Tech Panthers got their second win of the season over the Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, beating the Eagles 2-0 in Daytona. This on the heels of a 2-1 home win back on September 22.

Ian Leighton scored his first goal of the season in the first half and Guillermo Segovia Marcos scored his seventh on a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Tuesday saw the Panthers start Luis Tovar Romero in goal as the two teams played a non-conference match. Tovar Romero had the cleanest of clean sheets in the first half as the Eagles didn’t even register a shot. They did get off three shots in the second half with two of those on goal. Tovar Romero saved both of those.

The Panthers (4-3) got going early as Segovia Marcos had a shot in the first two minutes against Eagles goalie Jack Crichton. It was the only shot on goal for the Panthers through the first 20 minutes before a deflection off a goal kick came out to Leighton, who knocked it in off the post to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead 21:49 into the match.

Florida Tech ended the first half with 10 shots, three of those on goal. Crichton was credited with two saves. The Panthers took four corner kicks and kept the Eagles off the board in that category as well.

ERAU (2-7) came out in the second half with more forward movement and more ball control. They finally took their first shot of the match at the 70:11 mark and it was very close to tying the game. Collins Maude sent a looping header toward the net that Tovar Romero grabbed just inside the post, before it went over the goal line.

In the 80th minute, Julien Remiti rifled a ball in looking for the far corner but it was wide and out of the reach of a diving Crichton.

Things got heated late in the game as each team was issued yellow cards in the 87th minute, coming 23 seconds apart. A free kick for the Eagles was headed out by Segovia Marcos and Abram Murphy was off to the races. He was yanked down by his jersey, resulting in a penalty kick.

Segovia Marcos took the kick and his initial shot was saved by Crichton but he couldn’t squeeze it. Segovia Marcos pounced on the rebound and put it in, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead with 3:11 left in regulation.

Six of the Panthers 17 shots were on goal.
