Wingate Avenges Loss to Panthers

The Wingate Bulldogs beat Florida Tech 5-1 on Saturday at the Florida Tech Invitational in Cocoa. The win comes after Florida Tech came from behind Friday afternoon to win a 3-2 game.

The Panthers had beaten #8 Saint Anselm, earlier in the day on Saturday, but couldn’t get the offense going against the Bulldogs.

Wingate (5-2) got a run in the top of the first on a fielder’s choice after Florida Tech starting pitcher Samantha Guider allowed a double and there was an error in the inning. Laney McLaurin would make it 2-0 when she took Guider up and out in the third inning.

Guider (3-2) got the win earlier in the day against Saint Anselm, but she lasted just three innings in this one, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits. She threw 41 pitches before Alex Hendrian relieved her to start the fourth.

After walking the first batter, Hendrian threw two consecutive wild pitches. That proved costly as Heaven Maness singled home a run giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. They added another run on a Sydney Kale RBI double.

Florida Tech (5-3) scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Ella Chang Gibson reached on an error and went to third on a Jolie Miracle double. Mikayla Lewin singled her home, making it 4-1. Ashley Campbell followed with a single to load the bases, but Wingate was able to get the final out.

The Panthers would load the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but they couldn’t get the big hit to get back into the game.
